Debating News

Congratulations to Year 7 girls, Bridget and Ona, who were winners at the Sherfield Debating Competition last week. They won all but one of their debates, including opposing the motion 'This House would live on the moon'.

Earlier in the month, on a grey Sunday morning the Farleigh debating team arrived at Marlborough College for the 2017 Preparatory Schools Debating Day. Mr Cronin accompanied the team of Year 7 and 8 pupils: Alex, Annabel, Bridget, Freddie, Ned and Max, who were joined by teams from four other prep schools (Ashfold, St Hugh's School, The Pilgrims' School and Windlesham House).

In the morning, the children took part in a workshop which involved various debating and public speaking activities, followed by the debate which took place after lunch. The teams, comprised of pupils from each of the schools, debated the motion "This House believes the Arts are more important than the Sciences". Max and Freddie spoke for Farleigh, for the proposition and opposition respectively. Both spoke with eloquence, self-assurance and composure, delivering their arguments very persuasively, with Freddie being Highly Commended.
