St Cecilia Concert

'S Wonderful! 'S Marvellous! It was a truly special evening! Underneath a pea light canopy, the sports hall underwent a magnificent transformation into a concert hall to host a wonderful evening of music, with the school's talented ensembles on show. As ever, the children rose magnificently to the occasion over two hours of music themed around 'A Night at the Musicals'.

Two hundred and forty five pupils performed in 18 ensembles, each performing a well-known number from Broadway or the West End. The evening was framed by two of our choirs, the Junior Choir opening with songs from The Wizard of Oz and Mamma Mia!, and the Senior Choir closing the evening with performances of music from Alice in Wonderland and Sister Act. In between the Brass Band took us to Spamalot; the Flute Ensemble and Junior Clarinet Ensemble to the hills of Austria in The Sound of Music; Five Foot Six to Berlin in Cabaret; we were in the jungle with the Guitar Ensemble's Bare Necessties; under the sea with The Little Mermaid and Green Shoots; and the Junior Percussion Ensemble (making its debut) to Ireland in Riverdance.

We enjoyed the music of Gershwin (Senior Clarinet Ensemble and Thundering Herd), Brian May (Junior Strings), and Frankie Valli (the Rock Academy). The most memorable highlight was undoubtedly the Senior Percussion ensemble, complete with flat caps and brooms in their tribute to Stomp! There was certainly no rubbish in this performance. Just as the ceiling shimmered above the audience, the music glistened on stage courtesy of our young stars. My thanks to everyone in the Music Department who helped to harvest our pupils' challenge and to all the support staff, without whom the evening simply would never have been possible.
