Music flourishes at Farleigh and your child will have many opportunities to gain confidence from performing in public. Singing plays an important role in the life of the school and besides the daily singing in Chapel and weekly hymn practices, class lessons, particularly in Years 3 to 6, incorporate a large amount of singing.
A team of peripatetic staff who teach a wide range of instruments serves the Music Department. Two thirds of the pupils learn an instrument. The timetable is carefully prepared by the full-time music staff to avoid a child missing too many academic lessons. We are able to provide tuition in all major orchestral instruments and in recent years we have catered for harp and bagpipe pupils. Each term the ABRSM visit the school to examine children, and our current pupils have achieved a 100% pass rate.Opportunities for solo performance are readily available. Each term there are four or five informal concerts, and there are regular slots in assemblies. Participation in local festivals is encouraged and the standard of achievement is high.
The department actively encourages participation in ensembles and these include the Junior Band and Junior Strings for beginners and the Big Band and Senior Strings for more experienced players. There is also a Jazz band for more advanced musicians and specialist ensembles such as the Flute Choir, Saxophone Group and Guitar Trio. The Rock Academy for guitarists and Percussion Group for drummers are also popular after-school clubs to which children of all standards are welcome.
Years 3 and 4 are members of the Junior Choir and Years 5 to 8 have the option of joining the Senior Choir. The repertoire is mainly secular and recent years have seen much success in local and national festivals. The Chapel Choir is a selected group and is responsible for providing music at all school services. Recent tours have included Rome and Malta.
